The Other Bank (2009) Director: Giorgi Ovashvili The Other Bank has participated in over 100 international film festivals and has received nearly 50 international awards. The film tells the poignant story of Tedo, a 12-year-old boy displaced by war. Following the conflict in Abkhazia, he has lost everything. Now living with his mother in a makeshift shack in Tbilisi, Tedo struggles to adjust. His father, too ill to flee during the war, was left behind in their hometown. One day, filled with pain and longing, Tedo embarks on a journey back to the war-ravaged city to search for his father. Corn Island (2014) Director: Giorgi Ovashvili The film won the Crystal Globe, the top prize at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, and was shortlisted for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Set on a tiny island that emerges in the middle of the Enguri River after spring floods, Corn Island follows two farmers—an elderly man and his teenage granddaughter—who cultivate corn in a conflict zone. Their isolated and routine existence is disrupted when a wounded Georgian soldier, fleeing from violence, arrives on the island. As the days unfold, the island becomes a quiet stage for tension, humanity, and fragile coexistence. Khibula (2017) Director: Giorgi Ovashvili The film had its world premiere in the main competition of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. Khibula portrays the final days in the life of Georgia’s first democratically elected president, Zviad Gamsakhurdia. After receiving overwhelming public support in the election, he was soon forced into exile following a violent military coup. Determined to reclaim power, the president returned to Georgia, only to find himself marginalized and pursued. The film begins with his retreat into the mountains, accompanied by a small group of loyalists. As the story unfolds, we follow his journey—marked by shifting alliances, deepening isolation, and the tragic weight of destiny—toward its inevitable end. |
